If you've driven around the state lately, you've probably noticed that the Buffalo-Niagara region has the highest gas prices in the state.
On Tuesday, regular unleaded gas was selling in the Buffalo area for an average of $3.38 per gallon. In Rochester, that same amount was just $3.28, and in Albany the average price was as low as $3.00 per gallon.
"The price disparity even between Buffalo and Rochester is quite bizarre. Usually we see a difference of two to three cents, but now a days, especially over the past four weeks or so, we've really started to see that disparity grow," AAA Spokesman Shaun Seufert said.
According to Seufert, AAA has been researching the cause but so far has not found sufficient evidence that points to any one theory. He said understanding the reason behind the price difference will be the first step toward seeing falling prices.
"We're really reaching out to trade organizations, wholesalers, retailers on the gasoline side just to try to come up with an explanation," Seufert said. "We've heard a lot of theories but we haven't heard a lot of definitive answers yet."
While New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo was in town for an event, 2 On Your Side asked him if price-gouging were to blame for the area's significantly higher prices. He said his office was looking into it.
"We're reviewing the matter now to see if the gas gouging laws could be applicable," Cuomo said.
If you come across a pump price that you believe is extremely high you can file a complaint with the attorney general's office by calling 1-800-771-7755.
